Based on a shocking true story, Barbara Baekeland (Julianne Moore) is stuck in a dull marriage to her rich husband, Brooks (Stephen Dillane). As the couple drifts apart over the years, Barbara becomes closer and closer to their son Tony (Eddie Redmayne). Brooks thinks Tony is a failure, but Barbara sees something special in her boy, something so special that she becomes romantically involved with him.
